1 / 3

One of the most anticipated releases for the 2024 season will be the new version of the Puma Fast R Nitro Elite 2, a running shoe whose design leaves no one indifferent.

The Puma Fast R Nitro Elite 2 will be a running shoe that will be designed to guarantee maximum reactivity in our long-distance competitions.

What are the expectations for the Puma Fast R Nitro Elite 2?

PUMA will continue to revolutionize running shoes with the launch of this new model, which will be the German brand's bet to be used by runners in competitions.

In the absence of official information from the brand, we can advance that the new shoe will feature an even more flexible upper than the Puma Fast R Nitro Elite, with a much more pronounced sock structure.

The midsole design of the shoe will remain the same or very similar as it is one of the hallmarks of this model, it will continue to feature the NITRO Elite technology; the high performance foam developed by the brand that, along with the carbon plate, ensures great reactivity when running.

The rocker will be more pronounced, looking for even greater angles that will help us to provide more reactivity. The sole will end with a pointed toe at the front of the shoe, which will be one of the most talked-about new features of this new model.

The profile of runners for whom the shoe is intended will be the same as the first version, runners of light weight and with a great running technique to take full advantage of the performance of the shoe, it will not be a shoes for everyone but for use in competitions by the fastest and most technical.

Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2: speed and innovation to improve your personal best

Attention Runners! The Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2 is set to be a game-changer. We had the exclusive opportunity to test the PUMA Fast-R Nitro Elite 2 at the latest edition of The Running Event in Austin. Right from the start, it was evident that this model is a significant breakthrough for PUMA.

PUMA Fast-R Nitro Elite 2, top speed shoe

The German company's major wager to dominate the speed shoe category is certainly not in vain: the Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2 is a carbon plate model featuring a uniquely intriguing structure.

The carbon plate in these running shoes extends from the heel all the way to the toe. This plate is so distinctive that it protrudes from the forefoot.

The idea is spot on because the speed achieved with this model is impressive. Drawing some comparisons, we could liken them to the Nike Alphafly 3, particularly in terms of the bouncy sensation experienced while running with this shoe.

Ideal runner profile: Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2

Opting for the PUMA Fast-R Nitro Elite 2 means you're chasing those crucial seconds to shave off your pace. This racing shoe is designed for your most intense interval training sessions. If you're reading this review and are interested in this model, you likely understand the value of the carbon plate. With it, you can gain several seconds per kilometer while expending the same amount of energy.

Highlights: Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2

This PUMA super shoe has the following outstanding features:

Speed and cushioning

PUMA, in line with other brands, also embraces the trend of maximalism. In the PUMA Fast-R Nitro Elite 2, the sense of maximalism is particularly pronounced, combining the heel height with the rebound effect of the plate. In the heel area, the Nitro Elite foam is utilized. This compound is also featured in the midfoot area, and together, they offer very effective cushioning during the run.

Stability, guaranteed

The shoe features a very thin upper, akin to a sock, which provides considerable comfort. However, this design initially raised concerns about its stability. To address stability, the shoe incorporates a single piece around the tendon area. Despite these initial doubts, the combination of this piece and the sole's width has proven to be very stable in training sessions, even when pushing the pace higher.

Puma Fast R Nitro Elite 2: Surprisingly designed, surprisingly fast

The Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2 represents a step forward in the carbon plate racing shoes market, featuring a dual-part midsole and an exposed PWRPLATE carbon plate. These shoes retain certain characteristics of their forerunner yet introduce notable enhancements. PUMA states that the upgraded Nitro Elite midsole delivers 46% greater energy return, potentially leading to significant performance gains, especially in marathon running. However, rather than just relaying their claims, we think it's better to test them ourselves and share our findings directly on RUNNEA.

First impressions

During the trial of the Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2, the ULTRAWEAVE upper material, which is 20% lighter than its predecessor's, ensures a close and comfortable fit. Although the shoes are generally comfortable and provide excellent support around the heel and midfoot, the fit in the forefoot might feel tight for runners with wider feet, due to the compression in that area. Nonetheless, this snugness does not result in excessive tightness, and the forefoot has been slightly widened to enhance stability while running.

Ideal runner type

The Fast Nitro Elite 2 shoes cater to elite or seasoned runners seeking speed and efficiency, but may not be the best choice for those with wide feet or runners who favor a more structured heel support. They are particularly suited for runners who land on their midfoot or forefoot, given that the softer heel might not accommodate everyone.

Runners should also possess a polished running technique and ideally weigh no more than 70-75 kg to truly fly in these shoes.

Recommended distances and paces

The Fast Elite 2 shoes excel across various distances, designed to help you surpass your personal bests. Their stiff forefoot and softer heel configuration make them my preference for 10k and half marathons over longer distances, likely due to my landing style. They are particularly beneficial for runners aiming to improve their times, leveraging the shoe's aggressive design for a dynamic lift-off noticeable with each step.

What I liked the most

What stands out most about the Fast Nitro Elite 2 is their exceptional performance in races and training sessions like intervals or fartleks. The bold midsole design, coupled with the PWRPLATE carbon plate, enables running at rapid paces with a supportive sensation from the shoe. The traction provided by PUMAGRIP is outstanding, ensuring dependable grip across various conditions.

I found them to be superior to the Hoka Cielo X1 and the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3.

Possible points of improvement

The primary area for enhancement in the Fast Nitro Elite 2 lies in the fit of the upper, particularly around the forefoot, which could feel overly restrictive for some. Additionally, the extremely soft heel might deter heel strikers or those seeking more structured support in that area. Lastly, despite the upper's innovative design, its breathability and comfort during longer runs could be improved.

Rivals

The Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2 compete in a market full of high-performance running shoes. Their main rivals would be:

Nike Alphafly 3

Hoka Cielo X1

New Balance Fuelcell Supercomp Elite v4

Brooks Hyperion Elite v4

Final Verdict

The Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 2 presents an innovative approach in the carbon plate racing shoes arena, perfect for runners seeking a specialized design for competitions aimed at surpassing personal records. Although their advanced technical specifications are noteworthy, the particular fit and heel structure might restrict their suitability to a specific group of athletes. Nonetheless, it's clear that Puma is making significant strides to contend in a fiercely competitive market alongside giants such as Nike, Adidas, and New Balance. Its distinctive design is sure to stand out among your training peers.
