Carbon fibre plate

Another key aspect is its carbon fibre plate with dynamic wings. This plate not only provides a fast and agile stride, but also ensures stability on your most intense runs. The asymmetrical wings wrap the shoe centrally and laterally, offering a perfect balance between speed and control.

ProFly design

ProFly construction in the midsole hugs the carbon plate, sandwiched between two layers of reactive PEBA foam. This results in unprecedented energy return. The soft upper layer provides exceptional comfort, while the firmer lower layer gives you the power you need for maximum performance.

The Active Foot Frame system, which we have already seen in other reference models such as the HOKA Rincon 3, is included in an asymmetrical format that better fits the foot.

Hoka Cielo X1: Fast, comfortable and quite stable

The HOKA Cielo X1 emerges as a contender in the arena of high-performance running shoes, promising to make waves among elite runners with its carbon plate technology. After putting these shoes through their paces over 10 workouts, ranging from 10 to 25 kilometers, it's clear they are designed to strike a balance between speed, efficiency, and a degree of comfort. My experiences revealed a significant boost in speed and balance, positioning them as ideal for setting personal records. Despite being geared towards speed, the Cielo X1 surprisingly maintains a level of comfort, aided by a design that encourages midfoot landing through a rocker-type system. Yet, they are not without their flaws, such as a premium price tag and minor issues like stiff laces and a weight slightly heavier than some competitors. Nonetheless, they hold their ground against rivals like the Nike Alphafly 3 and the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1, making them a formidable option for competitive runners aiming for marathon distances or intense training sessions.

Ideal runner profile

The HOKA Cielo X1 is aimed at elite runners, particularly those who are lightweight, possess a polished technique, and have experience in distance competitions. These shoes are a match for runners dedicated to maximizing performance in every stride.

Technology and design

The standout feature of the Cielo X1 is the ProFlyX system, which integrates two layers of Peba foam with a softer rocker and a visible carbon fiber plate within the midsole. This innovative combination promises unparalleled efficiency and speed for HOKA, along with impressive stability throughout the run.

Comparison

Although the Cielo X1 excels in speed and balance, they may not quite match the lightness of models like the Nike Alphafly 3 or the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1. They also don't reach the same level of comfort as the New Balance Fuelcell Supercomp Elite v4. In other words, they're not the fastest, not the most comfortable, but they deliver in every aspect and are cheaper than the Nike or Adidas.

Comfort and fit

Focusing on speed does not come at the expense of comfort for the Cielo X1. They provide a secure fit and adequate support, making them suitable for long distances at brisk paces. The shoe's design facilitates midfoot landing and contributes to a dynamic, efficient running experience, striking a fine balance between comfort and performance. A greater volume of foam is felt just under the plantar arch, facilitating a smooth transition in each stride. In addition, its rocker-type design contributes to a more dynamic and efficient run. Despite not being extremely comfortable compared to other more comfort-focused models, for a carbon plate shoe, the Cielo X1 strike a remarkable balance between comfort and technical performance.

Opportunities for improvement

The HOKA Cielo X1 excels in numerous areas, yet there are specific aspects that could benefit from enhancements. The hefty price tag warrants attention, as it may deter some runners (a challenge not exclusive to Hoka but prevalent across many brands). In terms of weight, it is marginally heavier than other shoes in its class. Additionally, during my tests, I observed the quality of the laces; they're crafted from a rigid material that makes tying them uncomfortable and demands more effort to secure them properly. To prevent them from loosening, I had to tie double knots, which could be bothersome during runs. Furthermore, the absence of a heel strap, a feature greatly valued by triathletes for easier slip-on, is notable. While these details are minor, addressing them could significantly enhance the overall experience for the user.

The HOKA Cielo X1 stands out as an outstanding option for dedicated runners seeking footwear equipped with state-of-the-art technology to elevate their performance. Despite the high cost, the investment is vindicated by the shoe's superior quality and innovative features. They are certainly shoes I would endorse for anyone aiming to exceed their boundaries in competitive races and intense training sessions.
