One of the most outstanding new trail running shoes that has won one of the awards at the renowned ISPO Fair is the Merrell Agility Peak 5. A model that presents a new update more adapted to the times, more modern and more versatile than in previous editions.

The Merrell Agility Peak 5 is a trail running shoe whose main argument is that it has been tested by professional athletes Team Merrell, but whose feedback has also been important in moving forward with the development process of this top of the range shoe.

Key features of the Merrell Agility Peak 5

The Merrell Agility Peak 5 is a shoe that fulfills the spirit of today's outdoor shoe. That is: to present the performance of the most versatile model. Suitable for racing, and even for the practice of the most demanding hiking. In addition to other features such as a robust construction despite its light weight, it has been awarded the ISPO.

"The new Agility Peak 5 is our latest breakthrough from Merrell with maximum cushioning midsole while keeping our runners connected to the trail. We know athletes need traction, and with Vibram Megagrip underfoot with traction lugs, it will never be a concern. We are thrilled to see the growth in trail running participation and with the introduction of Agility Peak 5, we are looking to introduce even more runners to trail running. With a Gore-Tex version as an option, this shoe is ready for wet or dry conditions," said Nathan Buelow, senior brand manager for Merrell.

Excellent stability and grip option

Comfort is a priority in these Agility Peak 5 from Merrell. This is backed up by an increased midsole geometry. A detail that translates into a more noticeable and improved cushioning capacity with a height of 50 millimeters. The shoe's light weight is under 300 grams, and comes from the inclusion of FloatPro foam. Add to that the improved rocker construction. A lightweight compound that promotes a comfortable, lightweight running feel that is also very easy to run in. The running experience is more comfortable and efficient compared to the Merrell Agility Peak 4 version.

With a durable and breathable mesh upper, while improving support and fit, it is also worth mentioning the detail of that protective edge along the entire length of the shoe. This additional upper protection will have its impact on the increased durability of the model.

Things also get interesting with the outsole. This has been constructed in such a way that the shoe experiences maximum grip with the Vibram Megagrip compound, allowing it to adapt to uneven terrain with great stability. Additional stability is provided by the additional heel strap, which is also fixed.

All these ingredients result in a trail running shoe that is perfect for safe and perfect performance in the mountains, and especially on uneven terrain.

As a hallmark Merrell also pays attention to sustainability. The latest update of the Merrell Agility Peak 5 is no exception, as it features a recycled mesh lining as well as a 50% recycled EVA foam insole.

Merrell Agility Peak 5, very versatile for running medium and long distances in mountain terrain

In my first reviews with RUNNEA, I was fortunate to be able to squeeze a top selling Merrell Agility peak 4, leaving a good taste in my mouth on every trip to the mountain. You can tell that the Merrell team is doing things in luxury and putting the focus on this trail running. This 2023, it was time to take the new Merrell Agility peak 5 out of the lab and I assure you that, if they blindfolded me and put them in my hands, except for two details, I would not have guessed which shoe they are, so, they are coming with renewed and very well worked Agility Peak 5.

This year in Menorca, I had it easy, (Camí de Cavalls) and just a few hours before going to the airport I receive a call from my friends of RUNNEA: "Hey David, how about trying the new Merrell Agility peak 5 for Menorca? Well, said and done, these Agility Peak 5 were flying with me.

What kind of runners are the Merrell Agility Peak 5 for?

What kind of runners are the Merrell Agility Peak 5 for?

I consider these Merrell Agility Peak 5, very versatile, for medium and long distance runners. While it is true that perhaps trail runners that are get used to wider lasts may have the feeling of too much forced support.

Having a high level of reactivity and with a large dose of dynamism, this trail shoe is perfect for runners of intermediate and even high weights. I also see it as a feasible option for ultra distance races.

Its design also facilitates foot strike transition for faster paces.

For what distances do we recommend this Merrell all-terrain model?

As I said, this best-selling model from Merrell is designed for all distances, giving very good sensations in races, and medium and long distance training. That is why its most outstanding ingredients are fit, cushioning and stability.

What we liked most about the Merrell Agility Peak 5

But as first impressions, their design does not leave you indifferent, they are very striking. Upper very comfortable from the moment you put them on, feeling of lightness, excellent breathability, and with a very careful cushioning. In addition, the detail to consider is that the perception of the shoe's fit has improved compared to its previous version.

The sole of these Agility Peak 5 is very comfortable from the very first moment. Traction is very good on any type of surface, both in dry and wet areas, thanks to the design of the Vibram sole.

As a strong point I would highlight the feeling of fit of the foot, the feeling of comfort and versatility. Another aspect to highlight is the considerable improvement in breathability.

My expectations regarding this fifth version of the Merrell Agility Peak are quite high, because I hope, and I don't think I'm wrong in my feelings, that this is a model that will give me good results both in training and in running events of medium and long distance. Especially when it comes to enjoy for many and many kilometers.

Opportunities for improvement in the Merrell Agility Peak 5

Suitable for almost any type of terrain, although I have my doubts perhaps in very technical terrain in terms of the life of the shoe with respect to wear. I say this because in one of the training sessions in a rocky area, the midsole started to deteriorate, although it only affects it at an aesthetic level.

Opportunities for improvement in the Merrell Agility Peak 5

As an improvement option, I would highlight the change in the last. I see no need to make it narrower, as it was one of the highlights of the previous version of the Merrell Agility Peak 4.

In conclusion, I'm very happy to have tested this top of the range shoe from Merrell. Undoubtedly, we are talking about a model for mountain running that comes stomping strong for this Fall-Winter 2023 season.

Comfort, fit, versatility are its main features for my taste. Good investment thanks to its features and considerable improvements over its predecessor by reducing the weight and improving breathability throughout the upper.
