Made in Spain with everything you need to run fast, this Joma R 5000 Superfly has all the arguments that make it a radical racing shoe to shave seconds off the clock. So it is a model that goes through all the points that, in my opinion, are necessary for a shoe of these characteristics:

  • Weight under 200 grams. This model, for example, comes with a cardboard box with the exact weight for a size 8 USA (198 grams).
  • LowDrop, specifically 6mm.
  • Completely flat sole with lugs in the front to improve grip.
  • Comfort.

Review of the Joma R 5000 Superfly, 100% competition running shoe - photo 1

Right from the start and without saying anything, we can clearly see that this running shoe is perfect for any light runner who wants an extreme racing shoe, no mixed or similar. A racing shoe focused especially on shorter distances, (I would say as maximum 10K) although agood pro legs, can of course take them to longer distances such as the marathon. But in my opinion for land runners who are usually around 3.40 the km, I would not take it to more than 10K, 40 minutes would be their top.

On the other hand and to add a small comment on how the running shoe market is evolving, add that it is 100% of the theory of racing shoes, but of the models of two years ago, because we have a very low profile with a normal EVA foam, and no "big" midsole with carbon plates or similar.

These renewed Joma R 5000 is undoubtedly a shoe 100% focused on competition, in fact I think I've only tried one model so radical thanks to the help of Runnea, the M1400 model of New balance.

Review of the Joma R 5000 Superfly, upper: more support and comfort- photo 2

Features of the upper of the Joma R 5000: more support and comfort

Lightweight and comfortable upper formed for a single piece joined together by the heel seam. The toe area has a small reinforcement in the toe area to provide support, it is a little harder and more consistent than the competition, something that in my case is appreciated, because it also does not offer great resistance or discomfort.

On that same part we have a single perforated layer to offer greater breathability, while on the sides we have two TPU inserts surrounding the tongue, which are later attached to the midsole to offer greater support and comfort, something that is totally noticeable. The feeling is like wearing a sock, as they say, attached to a sole. The comfort and especially support is extreme, whether the movement is in line running or making sharp turns of 180 degrees, the shoe is always attached to our foot and responds at every moment, something that is easier thanks to its thin midsole of 6 mm, as this is something that does not happen with today's models of carbon.

The rest of the upper shows a very thin tongue with some small holes to improve breathability, of which you could have a little more as the material of the tongue seems to be the truth a little warm, as it can even look like synthetic leather, although I do not know 100% the material. To improve support it also offers two holes that cross the laces on the tongue, one more than normal or typical that all brands use.

Finally we have a heel that has a small buttress to have more support in this area.

In short we have a super comfortable mesh and especially attached to the foot perfect for higher or lively rhythms, as well as its last is thin and not particularly wide.

Review of the Joma R 5000 Superfly: soft and reactive cushioning in the midsole - photo 3

Soft and reactive cushioning in the midsole

The cushioning of this model is unique, i.e. it is made of a single material from start to finish, there are no combinations or simulation of different technologies, in fact there is no support as in other models in the upper part of the midsole, which is denser or harder to offer stability. Little therefore can be added or explained without sharing the running feel.

The feeling is of soft and reactive cushioning, there is no doubt about that, in fact you can feel how easy it is to dig your toe into the heel area. However, as the midsole is so thin, there is no bouncing sensation in each stride, you can immediately feel the contact with the ground. A small point in its favor in terms of sensations, is that its construction makes it easy to step with the metatarsus, offering a very comfortable transition of the footprint, since in addition to not having any component that helps the stability of the footprint or support, the flexibility of the shoe is extremely very simple.

With these arguments add that the type of user, in addition to having such lively rhythms previously discussed, it is clear that it must have a neutral footprint, but also a very refined tread technique . I don't think it is necessary to come from athletics for this; but if you heel a lot, sink the heel on the inside, or usually need insoles, I think this radical model could not be the one for you.

Here if I think that something could have been added to the shoe, all the white part of the sole, which is cushioning, because it is the gap that remains of not placing any rubber, you could have added a plate or similar that even slightly, facilitate or improve a transition of a straighter footprint.

Review of the Joma R 5000 Superfly, conclusions - photo 4

Conclusions of the Joma R 5000 Flyers

Total grip for the athletics track or asphalt, normally these shoes usually have some cleats in the front part of the sole, but in this model the complicated thing is not to see these studs. In the first half of the sole we have an extreme amount of studs, which are clearly noticeable in the tread when you run whatever the terrain. It is an outsole as I have commented from the beginning, with all the necessary theory for fast races or quality training, grip that is still simulated even in the heel area, although with a much simpler and not so aggressive lug pattern.

In conclusion, these JOMA R 5000 are 100% racing shoes with all the technology that existed before everything related to carbon plates. In fact they remind me a lot, both in feel and construction, to the first racing shoes that I fell in love with a long time ago, the adizero adios, that with boost or without boost were a real cannon for racing, and era undoubtedly the most used shoes by the first peloton of any popular race.

This shoe so radical and perfect but with the technology of a few years ago already leaves us to finish explaining the type of user, a runner who in addition to wanting a radical shoe, lightweight, and also very neutral, without any reinforcement or similar, does not want to spend more than its 70? RRP according to the brand. Which means that on the internet or in store, it will be even below 60?

Runnea tester's evaluation of the Joma R 5000 - photo 5

Runnea's tester's evaluation of the Joma R 5000

  • Cushioning: 6.

The shoe is 100% competition, so we can't give too much to this point. In the heel area you can feel an extra cushioning when you heel, it's true, but such a radical racing shoe can't get much more.

  • Flexibility: 9.

What I liked the most about the shoe, its construction makes it very easy to step with the forefoot, even at lower paces.

  • Response: 8.

Continuing with the very positive concept of flexibility, the shoe is really fast thanks to its lightness and flexibility, concepts that help the shoe's response.

  • Stability: 5.

The shoe is a glove and with extreme lightness and fine, fine cushioning, the stability of the shoe will be the stability of your stride.

  • Grip: 9.

I remember the first day of using them, the sole even sounded or made a kind of noise when running, it has miles studs throughout the sole with excellent grip, which is only noticeable by passing your hand.

Final average score: 7.4.
