We review Arrhythmial, a free app to monitor your heart and detect arrhythmias; I've already done it!

Arrhythmia App

It is a free App that allows you to monitor your heart rate and detect arrhythmias, as well as share your records and medical history.
You can use it with different pulse sensors both chest bands and the new systems of reading via LED on the wrist.

The Arrhythmial Medical APP is free and is available for both iPhone and Android in both English and Spanish.

I have used it with my Suunto Smart sensor or chest band and it is very easy to use, through the cell phone you can track your heart rate and the app makes an assessment of your heart rate being a good resource for cardiovascular prevention.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death and hospitalization worldwide with high healthcare costs.

 app to detect arrhythmias

Cardiac arrhythmia is a heart rhythm disturbance, either irregular beats or rate variations such as tachycardia or abnormally high pulse, or abnormally low bradycardia. Some arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, if they last for a short time have little impact on heart function, but if they last for minutes they can trigger alterations in consciousness, strokes or even cardiac arrest.

This App has the IHB (Irregular HeartBeat) function that allows the detection of atrial fibrillations (AF) which is a type of arrhythmia characterized by the presence of frequent irregular heartbeats. AF is an irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other cardiac complications, according to the American Heart Association.

Atrial fibrillation dramatically increases the likelihood of stroke, which can have serious consequences.

AF is usually detected with an electrocardiogram at a standard medical checkup, but there are times when the electrocardiogram does not register it during the duration of the medical checkup. Sometimes the irregular heart rhythm is not discovered until after a stroke.

It allows you to detect cardiac arrhythmias in real time and calculates cardiovascular health indicators automatically, in addition to the possibility of connecting with a doctor online 24 hours a day.

This App is the result of a Spanish research project carried out at the University of Valencia. Carlos Mulet, a doctor specializing in Family and Community Medicine at the Hospital Cínico de Valencia, has worked on this App as part of his doctoral thesis, and says that "a large number of asymptomatic people have a high probability of suffering a cardiovascular event as they have two or more risk factors, and in more than 60% of cases they are not adequately controlled". For this reason, he considers that the only way to improve this situation "is to promote primary prevention through healthy lifestyle habits and early diagnosis, but improvements in this campo are still scarce".

The main objective of the dissemination and use of this App by the greatest number of people is, for Mulet, "the identification and early diagnosis of this arrhythmia and the costs and consequences of the absence of its treatment". He considers that the Arrhythmial App has proven to be an excellent tool for accurately monitoring the heart rate with an almost perfect correlation with the reference electrocardiograph.

The risk of cardiac arrhythmia increases with age, and our society has an increasingly long-lived population, so it is a growing problem....

How to use the new application

 app to detect arrhythmias

Real-time pulse analysis

Using the Suunto Smart sensor chest strap via bluetooth you can analyze your heartbeat to detect bradycardias and tachycardias that will be classified as mild, moderate or severe. In my case, I immediately detect my "severe bradycardia" with an audible and visual alarm, something I already knew and the result of cardiac adaptation after many years of competitive sports practice in endurance sports.

Irregular heartbeat detection

Activating the IHB (Irregular Hearbeat) mode allows detection of isolated irregular beats such as extrasystoles or frequent irregular beats that could indicate atrial fibrillation.

Activity mode selection

Select the activity mode (rest, light, moderate or sleep) to adjust the sensitivity to the cardiac variability of each situation.

Alarm logging and customization

Automatically generates visual and audible alarms with an action guide according to the severity of the detected arrhythmia. In my case, when detecting severe bradycardia, it urges you to contact your doctor immediately, advising a cardiological check-up.

Electronic medical records

Creates the clinical history and incorporates periodic health controls, including blood pressure, O2 saturation, weight, glycosylated hemoglobin, glycemia, triglycerides, etc.; automatically generating six cardiovascular risk indicators.

Monitoring among users

If you are a doctor, nurse or simply want to monitor the health of a family member, you can do it online for all of the above.

In conclusion a very useful and practical App that allows you to expand the usefulness of your Suunto chest strap of your GPS heart rate monitor for sports use only, giving the possibility to control and assess your heart rate and also contribute to the control of your cardiovascular health.
