Although its name is more typical of Germany and its design resembles Italian footwear, the truth is that Munich sneakers are a product that is manufactured very close to Barcelona, specifically in the town of Sant Boi de Llobregat. The history of this prestigious and renowned brand linked to sports and fashion begins in 1939, after the Spanish Civil War.

The business project began, like many others, from a small family business full of enthusiasm and motivation. Grandfather Berneda, a shoemaker by profession, together with the rest of the family, started manufacturing all kinds of footwear. The effort and the many hours of work invested soon saw their reward, reaching a position among some of the most prominent footwear manufacturers of the time.

After a decade of consolidation in the sector, the Berneda family took a risky but ultimately successful decision: to specialize in technical sports footwear. Thus, in 1953, the Berneda brothers entered the unknown field of athletics as manufacturers. Success was not long in coming, taking the company to the top, until it established itself as a pioneer in the production of sports shoes in Spain.

MUNICH and its iconic 'X' logo

In 1964, two decisive changes took place. On the one hand, the Berneda corporation adopted MUNICH as its trade name. On the other hand, the new brand incorporated the characteristic and iconic 'X' logo that would be silk-screened on each and every one of its sneaker models. And like many things that happen in this life, the 'X' logo came about by chance, as the visibility of the stitching that joined the front and back of the shoe made the shoe look unattractive. As a solution to the problem, they added two bands that would give rise to the legendary 'X' on MUNICH shoes.

The emergence of futsal

Another of the events that gave the brand a big boost was the furor for futsal during the 1980s in Spain. A sporting discipline that began to be practiced en masse and in which Spanish footballers soon began to stand out until they became a benchmark at the international level.

The Berneda brothers saw in this sport a unique business opportunity that they did not let slip away. To do so, they decided to design a specialized shoe for futsal. The GOAL model triumphed among the people who practiced futsal, consolidating the MUNICH sports brand to the top and making it a market leader. Despite the passing of the years, the MUNICH GOAL shoe is one of the top selling products of the Catalan brand.

MUNICH makes the leap into fashion

Another qualitative leap in the brand's history took place at the beginning of 2000, when MUNICH made a strategic decision to reissue the successful GOAL model and take it from the indoor soccer courts to the streets. This is how the 'X' brand broke into another market segment: fashion.

After hard work in R&D, coupled with a strong national and international demand for the reissued GOAL model, MUNICH decided to create new sneaker designs to further strengthen its presence in the fashion world through its streetwear line.

Each new model that joins the brand's lifestyle catalog is inspired by one of the flagship sneakers in the sports range. The ROC model, for example, comes from athletics and cross country shoes: the ACROPOL sneaker is influenced by taekwondo models. In addition to this, MUNICH has always been concerned with innovation, incorporating technical solutions into its Sneakers to make them more comfortable and durable.

Today, MUNICH has more than 77 years of experience in the footwear sector. The third generation of the Berneda family continues to strive and work day by day to keep growing a brand that continues to preserve its roots, while relying on technology to progress and to be able to offer consumers a quality product based on the latest fashion trends.
