The "Patriot's Day" coincided with Monday, April 15, and therefore the 128th edition of the Boston Marathon was experienced as a day of celebration and running. A day with two great protagonists such as the Kenyan athlete Hellen Obiri (2.22:37) and theEthiopian runner Sisay Lemma (2.06:17), who won the women's and men's races respectively.
In addition, and as you well know in RUNNEA we also put the spotlight on the running shoes of the winners of this mythical 42k, the oldest marathon on the planet. In this sense, adidas has been ahead of Nike in the men's race, while in the women's competition there has been a surprise, because neither adidas nor Nike have been present on the final podium. Boston Marathon 2024 rankings
Before the starting gun of the more than 30,000 participants in this Boston Marathon, both the capital of Massachusetts and the Boston Athletic Association took the opportunity to pay an emotional tribute to the victims, survivors and good Samaritans who helped during the attacks in this marathon in 2013. A heartfelt ceremony in which flowers were placed at the exact spot where the fateful events took place, and which resulted in people being killed and hundreds injured.
In terms of competition, and in reference to the women's category, Hellen Obiri defended her crown and, a priori, era the main rival to beat. With a final time of 2 hours 22 minutes and 37 seconds, the Kenyan athlete signed her second consecutive victory in Boston. The final podium was formed by Sharon Loki (2.22:45) and Edna Kiplagat (2.23:21), second and third classified respectively.
Obiri's brilliant victory is her third win out of the four marathons she has competed in during this 2024. It goes without saying that the Kenyan runner is in direct competition for the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Marathon.
The truth is that the script of the race has been a hand to hand between Obiri and Lokedi, where, finally, Obiri has put all her talent to overcome her tenacious compatriot Lokedi.

In the men's race, the race film was not as close as it was in the women's race. Sisay Lemma (2.06:17) wasted no time and asserted his dominance over the peloton, breaking away from the pack after only 20 minutes and maintaining his lead for the rest of the race, despite the challenges of the course that makes it a really demanding race.
Such was the power that Lemma showed on the asphalt that during several sections of the first half of the race, the Ethiopian athlete made everyone dream of a possible record of the race, even with the possibility, not remote, of improving the world marathon world record of the late Kelvin Kiptum2.00:35).

What is the route of the Boston Marathon 2024?
It is also traditional that the roadmap to follow in this new edition of the Boston Marathon will start on the quiet Main Street of Hopkinton, a town that encapsulates the rural charm of the region.
From there, participants will follow Route 135 through Ashland and Framingham before arriving in Natick, recognized as one of the most historic towns in Massachusetts. The journey continues to Wellesley, where the route joins Route 16, a segment that offers not only physical challenges but also evocative and motivating scenery.
One of the highlights of the course is the statue of Stylianos Kyriakides in Newton Lower Falls. Kyriakides is not only a winner of the 1946 Boston Marathon, but also a hero who ran for a greater cause, raising funds for his native Greece in a time of need.
The course then leads runners to turn right at the first station onto Commonwealth Avenue (Route 30). This section guides athletes along Hill Avenue to Cleveland Circle, where the route takes a turn onto Beacon Street. This stretch is spectacular, passing through Brookline and Kenmore Square, areas known for their vibrant atmosphere and unwavering crowd support.
The final stretch is as exciting as it is historic, turning onto Hereford Street, heading away from the usual traffic, and then left onto Boylston Street. It is here that runners make their final push before crossing the finish line near the iconic Boston Public Library in Copley Square.

The start of the 128th edition of the Boston Marathon was scheduled to take place at 09:37 a.m. (local time) for the elite men's race and at 09:47 a.m. (local time) for the elite women's race. With a difference of 6 hours, in Spain, the start will be at 15:30 hours on Monday, April 15, 2024.

Who are the favorites to win the Boston Marathon 2024?
In the women's category of the Boston Marathon 2024, Hellen Obiri, the last winner of the race, stands out as the rival to beat.
However, she will not be alone in the fight for victoria. A remarkable trio of Ethiopian marathoners, all with impressive sub:18:00 times, are also aiming to dominate the race. Among them is Worknesh Defega, who already knows what it's like to win in Boston, having achieved victoria in 2019. Tadu Teshome, with a personal best time of 2:17:36, will be making her debut in this edition, while Hiwot Gebremaryam, who finished eighth last year, is looking to improve on her result. In addition, Ababel Yeshaneh, who was second in 2022 and fourth in 2023, is also one of the names to watch out for.
The Kenyans are not far behind, with Edna Kiplagat, twice champion in Boston, and Mary Ngugi-Cooper, among the top ten in the last four editions.
In the men's category, Evans Chebet defends his crown in Boston. Despite being one of the favorites, Chebet will face tough competition. Sisay Lemma, the fourth fastest man in the world over the distance, comes from winning the Valencia Marathon with an impressive time of 2:01:48.
There will also be Gabriel Geay, runner-up at the 2023 Boston Marathon, whose best time is 2:03:00, putting him on Chebet's level in terms of personal bests.
Other runners to watch out for include Cybrian Kotut with a time of 2:04:34, Ronald Korir with 2:04:22 and Haftu Teklu with 2:04:43, all with marks that promise to make this race one of the closest in the history of second Majors.
