To enjoy your favorite sport safely at night, whether running on roads and trails or cycling seeing and being seen by others.

I have known the Swedish brand Silva, world famous for its compasses and headlamps, for more than 20 years. In the vocational training course "Sports Technicians in Sports Activities in the Natural Environment" we work a lot on orienteering with the students and for this purpose we have a set of Silva beacons and compasses at our disposal.

Silva has earned its prestige, since in 1933 it was Silva who invented the first liquid capsule compass with a flat base, more precise and easier to handle than other compasses. At the same time, he created the first headlamp, which allowed outdoor enthusiasts to practice their hobbies at night.

From then until today, the Silva brand is synonymous with precision and reliability thanks to its long experience in the design and development of the technology needed to make the most of libre sports.

Silva Trail Runner III Ultra headlamp

Silva Trail Runner III Ultra

This new headlamp offered by the Swedish brand Silva for winter 2017/18 is distributed by www.vertical.es and presents a number of new features compared to the models tested last year.

This third model of Trail Runner reference in Silva headlamps, offers 250 real lumens of a powerful high quality beam that allows you to see all the objects in front of you at a distance of about 65 meters.

It has two power source options which gives it greater flexibility, on the one hand a rechargeable lithium battery that can be carried in a windbreaker pocket or worn in the cycling jersey, without any burden or space problem given its small volume, or you can use it with AAA batteries by carrying them on the back of the strap that holds the headlamp on the forehead.

The battery life is longer than the models tested last year, lasting 18 hours in low power mode and up to 6 hours at maximum with the rechargeable battery and 90 hours in low power mode and up to 30 hours at maximum with AAA batteries.

It has two possibilities of power of the light beam that are controlled from the drive on the side of the support of the bulb, being able to combine as needed more or less intensity thus adding a greater autonomy. It includes double battery pack.

One of its main features is the Intelligent Light® lighting system that Silva incorporates only in the most technical models. This feature refers to the way in which the 2 LED spotlight (1 ultra-powerful and 1 less powerful) manages and distributes the light, offering a good balance between long-range light flow and that which illuminates the peripheral areas.

This is the recreation of the effect:

Silva Intelligent Light® vs "traditional" light.

This technology allows, in addition to offering a light beam of about 65 m. long, to see the peripheral areas with more clarity, to see where we step without shadows, allowing us to move at different speeds without fear, reducing eyestrain and dispensing with unnecessary head movements for better focus.

Its light beam is vertically adjustable, which allows to cover more or less campo length, being very easy to adapt it to the type of terrain where you move.
Running on roads and forest tracks in good condition or known roads the intermediate intensity is sufficient, but on more technical roads or unknown areas it is necessary to use it with the maximum power for which we will need only a simple press on the button.
It has 3 lighting modes through a single button of large dimensions and easy to find and press even wearing gloves, and can select the maximum power, economic, or intermittent beam and its autonomy will be in relation to the power mode chosen; pressing the button a few seconds turns off.

The IPX5 rating refers to the degree of resistance or protection against very powerful jets of water. This model can withstand a jet of water thrown from any angle and pressure or sea..... This Trail Runner 3 will not let you down!

RRP: 110€ including red rear light Silva Tyto.

Opportunities for improvement:

  • When the battery charge indicator turns red warning that the battery is low, you better come out of the dark because it gives for little.
  • When the batteries are running low the power slackens and safety is compromised offering during the last few hours a "backup" beam that is insufficient to run with guarantees.

Strengths:

  • 2 Power source options, if you can't or don't have the option to charge the battery via USB, batteries will get you out of a tight spot.
  • Longer battery life
  • The SILVA Intelligent Light® optimizes the light beam by combining a long range and a crisp close light that allows with less head movement a clear view of near and far obstacles.
  • An indicator helps you keep track of the charge level before your activity and charges in 4 hours.
  • The non-slip headband ensures a comfortable fit.
  • To make you more visible in the dark, it includes a handy SILVA Tyto red visibility light, which you can clip to the back of your helmet or backpack and be seen perfectly from behind.

This small Tyto light is specially designed for night cycling, but it never hurts to carry it on your wind deflector or backpack while riding.

It is a small circular red position light device, which can be carried on the back of the bike. The purpose of the red rear light is to indicate to other users the presence of a cyclist on the road, or an athlete running through the city as it can be easily attached to the back skirt of the jacket or any other garment thanks to the rear clip and because its placement does not pose any discomfort since its weight and size is very small.

By pressing the large power button located in the center of the device, the light turns on as a flashing flash and if you press it again it remains constant and with a long press it turns off. It is easy to operate while pedaling, running or walking without any problems even when wearing thicker gloves while pedaling. The device is included with the Trail Runner 3 headset Runner 3 comes with a velcro strap that expands the possibilities of carrying it on any item such as backpacks or saddlebags.

It has two 210 mAh CR2032 lithium batteries that guarantee 24 hours in continuous mode or 100 hours in flashing mode and is perfectly resistant to water both from rain and from the ground thrown up by the rear wheel when pedaling. If you use it during intercity journeys, it is important to remember that road regulations require that in addition to the red position light you must also wear a reflector (not triangular) of the same color, as well as a reflective garment so that drivers and other users can distinguish you at a distance of 150 meters. Silva's Visibility Jacket (see photos) is ideal for this purpose.

In conclusion, this is a position light that is tiny in size and weighs only 15 gr, but at the same time powerful and practical. Designed to be carried in your pocket and turned on when you need to be visible to drivers when running around town, it can be easily attached to your leggings, belt, pockets or jacket skirt thanks to its clip. It is very easy to carry it on the back of the backpack or to attach it fixed to the seat post of the bicycle thanks to the fastening strap. It is available in red and white. In my opinion it is a simple little device that all sportsmen should always carry with them because using the Tyto is the easiest way to invest in road safety.

Conclusion and user profile:

Silva Tyto

This headlamp is one of the best models on the market for training night running, or pedaling at night; it is lightweight, with beautiful aesthetics and a very comfortable hold on the head thanks to the anti-slip silicone band. It uses Silva Intelligent Light ® light distribution technology, a good combination of long-distance light beam and short-distance definition of the environment, which is appreciated by perceiving less eye fatigue and above all for a better perception of the terrain.

The focus is small and its range graduation according to the inclination of the focus requires some strength and sometimes even using both hands, but this solidity is appreciated in jumps and sudden movements because the focus does not move at all.

Be careful with the overheating of the lamp when you take more than two hours of use especially at maximum power although the heat source in the middle of winter is appreciated because it radiates a lot of heat. In terms of autonomy, hours have been gained over the previous year's models and the fact that it is compatible with batteries will always get you out of trouble if you can not charge with USB.

Although it is a front with a rear pack containing the batteries, this is small and its weight of 72 gr and low volume do not affect during the race once you get the proper adjustment of the elastic band. The versatility of also being able to use it with a USB rechargeable lithium battery is a plus and a strength for this headlamp that you can use every day. Sometimes having those spare batteries, especially if they are small like these triple A batteries, makes it easier to continue using it if the battery runs out immediately without having to rely on the mains or the computer to recharge it.
