What should you look for before buying trail running shoes? Undoubtedly the outsole.
Different surfaces and weather conditions mean that you need a shoe with maximum traction without sacrificing stability and wear resistance.

The main traction element is its multi-cut design, different in the lateral and central areas. The lateral ones are bidirectional and oriented to follow the flexion lines of the shoe. The cone-shaped central lugs provide excellent grip on all types of surfaces, including dirt, slopes and even wet surfaces.

Their circular design facilitates turning during abrupt changes of direction caused by obstacles, thus avoiding joint injuries. In the shank, the lugs are more linear, so that no part of the sole loses its traction characteristic while the foot is in contact with the surface. The composition is high quality rubber, which has withstood high abrasion cycles to test its resistance. Density and hardness have also been studied.

Joma also wants to make a niche for itself in the world of trail running and for this reason it is launching its TREK model, designed for all types of runners, but especially for those who are entering the increasingly popular field of mountain races.

With a design very much in the style of the models currently on the market and in which the unmistakable J stands out at first glance with its blocking and the reinforcement of the toe. The sole is the first thing we look at in mountain shoes and in this case Joma technicians have taken great care. With this multi-toe option, different on the sides, in the central area and in the forefoot area, they seek to combine stability and traction, something fundamental when we move through these terrains.

The reinforced toe area is also a success, but the composition of the rest of the upper seems a bit basic, resistant, but a bit coarse and unpleasant. The tongue incorporates a pocket to store the laces, an option that is present in shoes of different brands to minimize the chances of getting caught in the race. This model weighs 350 grams for the size we tested, EUR 445 - 285 cm.

FEELING WHEN WEARING JOMA TREK SHOES

From the moment you put on the Trek you can already guess its greatest virtue, versatility in different terrains. The fit of the shoe is good, giving a feeling of comfort, halfway between an asphalt model and a mountain model, something that will be appreciated by those who are not accustomed to the latter type of footwear. Flexible and with good cushioning as well as stable and secure, will this be confirmed in training sessions?

RUNNING WITH THE JOMA TREK

Once in full action, the Joma Trek corroborates the predictions: they have good performance on the asphalt areas, good transition to the mountain, by not giving a heavy feeling. That is the feeling of mountain shoes that we find in other more technical shoes.

When going on trails, they continue to respond well, they allow us to enjoy this type of terrain even with mud, stepping on branches or some rocks that appear on the ground. In turns and attacking uphill, the design of the sole with its multidirectional studs facilitates our movement and prevents us from losing traction.

On the other hand, when moving to very technical areas of polished rock, very steep descents or on rough surfaces, we see that they do not respond in the same way, we notice a lack of stability and security when passing through these places of maximum difficulty, something that does not surprise us and what we were counting on. They lack a point of aggressiveness to be victorious in these terrains, it is not its strong point, but still has a good behavior.

After several tests in which we have alternated dry terrain with mud, rainy days and quite ho,t we have appreciated in more detail and depth that mixed profile of the Joma Trek, its successful sole and good cushioning in hard areas, but also that the material that surrounds the foot can be improved.

WHO CAN WE RECOMMEND THE JOMA TREK TO?

We have no doubt that it is a model suitable for runners who are just starting out in the world of trail running, who want to take it step by step and complete this first learning stage with short training sessions (up to 2 hours without problems) over mixed terrain.

It can also be an option for more experienced mountain runners, to go fast on trails and forest trails on those days that do not touch areas of maximum difficulty.
