adidas Running seeks to differentiate itself from its competition with technological innovations such as the revolutionary Boost foam, or the use of recycled plastic in its shoes. And now we have the adidas 4DFWD. A model made with 3D printing that also seeks to improve the runner's running efficiency by seeking forward momentum in each stride. adidas 4DFWD is the sum of several years of data collection from athletes who have used Carbon's Digital Light Synthesis™ 3D printing technology. The result is a curious geometric structure in the shoe's midsole, which is also designed with 39% bio-based material.

Features of the adidas 4DFWD: Boosting the runner's inertia

With this new innovative technological midsole design, adidas seeks to help the runner take advantage of the horizontal inertia of the race in each stride. According to the brand, the aim is to reduce the braking force "by 15%". The result is a midsole formed by a lattice structure that provides better management of running economy.

Just as it did with German chemical company BASF for the release of the renowned Boost cushioning system, adidas has once again entered into a strategic agreement with California-based 3D Carbon, pioneers in using digital light projection and liquid resin- and oxygen-permeable optics to bring out high-performance, longer-lasting products. This fruitful collaboration has been combining efforts since 2017 to present the world's first 3D printed midsole. The result of this commitment to cutting-edge technology means that the adidas 4DFWD's midsole adapt to specific movement patterns.

Adidas 4DFWD

The adidas 4DFWD features a PRIMEKNIT+ fabric upper that we have already seen in shoes like the adidas UltraBoost 21. It works perfectly with the new midsole, supporting the runner in every forward motion with a sock-like fit, while allowing the foot to breathe freely.

Another important detail in the new adidas 4DFWD is its inclusion of the Primegreen concept, highlighting the the three stripes brand's commitment to protecting the environment. Thus, this Adidas model features a combination of high-performance recycled materials, and has discarded the use of virgin polyester, for example.

adidas 4DFWD 's strengths and highlights

Strengths and highlights of the adidas 4DFWD

FWD CELL midsole: Geometric lattice-like structure made of 39% bio-based material, manufactured with 3D printing. Provides 23% more cushioning and generates three times more forward motion compared to previous generations of 4D midsole under vertical load in laboratory conditions.

PRIMEKNIT+ UPPER: Using historical mapping data, the PRIMEKNIT+ upper has been designed to work perfectly in sync with the midsole, supporting the runner through every movement with a sock-like fit while allowing the foot to breathe freely.

3D Digital Light Synthesis: In collaboration with the American company Carbon 3D, the midsole concept of these Adidas 4DFWD is completely different from what we have seen so far: a lattice structure, where the material is able to compress forward, counteracting the forces of impact. The sensation felt by the runner is that of being propelled forward, a unique process transforming the vertical impact into a horizontal force.

Since the theory of such a novel concept as proposed by the adidas 4DFWD is difficult to understand at first glance, it's best to go by what the adidas Team athletes have to say. "Getting the right training shoes is very important for my preparation because it assures me that I'm doing things in the best way to reach my goals. In the specific case of the adidas 4DFWD, not only aesthetics but also performance wins out, because they offer the perfect combination of performance and comfort in every training session," says South African athlete Wayde van Niekerk, the 400m world record holder.

A running shoe with the soul of a sneaker

If there is something we have to thank adidas for is their commitment to create running shoes and all kinds of products that are friendly to the environment and the planet. We have already seen it with their Run for the Ocean campaign (creating shoes from recycled plastics collected from the seas) and we see it with the shoe we are going to talk about today. And in addition, in the case of the model we are going to present you, we have to add its innovative component. We present the adidas 4DFWD, a name not too familiar with "marketing" that brings as a novelty to be the first 4D printed midsole in the world of running.

Adidas 4DFWD: Technology, design and comfort

As we mentioned, we have seen adidas manufacture shoes using recycled plastics, but what we had not seen was the creation of a 3D printed midsole with a network of "pipes" that form a geometric structure specifically designed to provide cushioning, reactivity and comfort while running. The goal is to improve running efficiency by propelling the runner forward with each stride.

The result is a shoe that looks much more like a sneaker than a running shoe due to its spectacular design.

What type of runner are these Adidas 4DFWD suitable for?

4dfwd

The adidas 4DFWF is a very versatile running shoes aimed at runners with neutral and heel strike who are looking for comfort and cushioning to run at a relaxed pace of between 5:00 and 6:30 minutes per kilometer. For runners of all weights.

All the vertical force that we apply in the landing of the foot in each stride, the midsole technology converts it into horizontal momentum. This provides a certain amount of support during the race. In a shoe that has a drop of 113 mm and an approximate weight of 330 grams in a size 95 USA.

For what kind of distances we recommend the adidas 4DFWD

It is not a shoe for a specific distance. It is a model to enjoy running without pretensions. You will be able to use it for your 10k or even longer distance runs, without thinking about the titmo. Keep in mind that it does not have too many supports and fastenings, so for long distances you will need a good running technique.

You have to wear the adidas 4DFWD without great pretensions. Just the desire to run with totally different sensations than you've ever felt before. Does that not seem like enough of an incentive?

What we liked most about the adidas 4DFWD

Mainly adidas' commitment to innovation. We appreciate not only their commitment to creating products that are committed to helping the sustainability of the planet, but also that they do it with models that work and provide a plus to the runner.

The PRIMEKNIT+ upper is simply spectacular. Without a single uncomfortable seam throughout the shoe, a second skin that will mold to you like a neoprene sock. Get ready for maximum comfort for our feet.

4dfwd

And thirdly, its design. It is a shoe that attracts attention. I'm not going to fool you, I've used them more as a sneaker or casual shoe than for running. It is a model to be looked at.

What we liked least about the adidas 4DFWD

It is a shoe with some instability as it has few fastening elements. Especially in turns, changes of direction, it is perceived that the foot does not have too much support. For this reason we recommend it for running at gentle and relaxed paces without great expectations of making a mark.

Its price is still far from the big market. But understanding the complexity of manufacturing these adidas, we hope that the standardization of manufacturing processes and the launch of new models will help to lower its price.

4dfwd

What are the rivals of the adidas 4DFWD?

Well, I'm not going to fool you, I haven't found anything similar. In fact, as of today, July 2021, there is nothing similar to this midsole and its structure made of 39% bio-based material.

Conclusion

Possibly one of the shoes of the year for its innovative contribution and its incredible design. The search for innovative materials, recycled, technologies that help the runner in the race is to be welcomed. Adidas will continue to bet on changing the way of conceiving running while taking care of the planet. Let's keep it up.
