1 / 7

Since the end of September we can enjoy the latest addition to the Suunto Spartan family: the new Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro, which comes to market with an RRP of 549 euros and is presented as a GPS watch for multisport activities with heart rate measurement from the wrist and atmospheric pressure sensor, which brings greater accuracy to altitude readings, as highlighted by the Nordic brand of sports instruments.

And all this without forgetting that the entire Spartan collection receives a software update that introduces sleep tracking, improvements in route navigation, sunrise/sunset times and high mountain and skiing functions.

Features to highlight

  • 10-hour battery life in training mode (up to 40 hours with power-saving options)
  • Convenient wrist-based HR measurement
  • Aluminum bezel, mineral crystal glass
  • Outdoor color touch screen
  • Water resistant to 100 m
  • Barometric altitude
  • GPS/GLONASS route navigation with POI and breadcrumb trail view
  • Sport capabilities and support for over 80 sports with running and interval uses

Comfortable and ideal for outdoor activities

The Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro is made of premium materials and guarantees comfort in daily use and robust solutions for all libre activities as well as training.

Thus, the watch employs GPS/GLONASS in order to accurately track speed, pace and distance, as well as Valencel's HR technology, a leading innovator in biometric data sensor technology, for the purpose in this case of heart rate monitoring.

In practice, the optical heart rate sensor on the back of the watch shines an LED light on the wearer's wrist and measures the amount of light scattered by the bloodstream. This is based on the fact that light entering the body scatters predictably as blood flow dynamics change, such as with changes in pulse rate or changes in blood volume (cardiac output).

The advantage of wrist-based heart rate is its convenience in being able to measure heart rate without the need to wear a heart rate belt or other separate sensor.

Daily activity tracking includes steps and calories, as well as the above-mentioned minimum heart rate for up to 12 hours.

Suunto FusedAlti technology combined with GPS and barometric data

Suunto is aware that correct altitude readings are essential in outdoor environments. So the new Spartan Sport Wrist HR Baro uses Suunto s FusedAlti technology combined with GPS and barometric data to provide more accurate altitude information. The watch also includes sunrise/sunset times and storm alerts for when sudden drops in atmospheric pressure occur.

Some of the big beneficiaries of this new model will be backcountry and alpine skiers, who will have the new skiing features in alpine sport modes at their fingertips, with more data on display about their sport. The new features include a run counter, length display, verticals and top speed during descents.

The software update, which introduces the new outdoor features to the Spartan collection, is scheduled to be available on October 17 to coincide with the retail launch of this new model.

Suunto heatmaps updated with new Moves

Since June 2016, Suunto heatmaps help you locate the best places and routes to exercise, whether you're looking for the most popular spots or want to get away from the crowds. Since its launch, millions of new Moves have been recorded in the Suunto Movescount database. To keep the heatmaps shining, new Moves will be updated for each of the 16 sports until the end of October, creating an even more extraordinary and robust network of training routes and locations.

The heatmaps are public and available to everyone, without the need to register with Suunto Movescount. Just choose your preferred area on the map, select one of 16 sports, zoom in and see the most popular routes for mountain running, cycling, open water swimming, skiing and many others. Based on the heatmaps, you can plan your own routes in Suunto Movescount and transfer them to your Suunto GPS watch for running.
