Suunto 9

Suunto launches its new top-of-the-line multisport heart rate monitor / sports watch, Suunto 9 Baro. It is a perfect GPS watch for all types of outdoor sports for those athletes looking for maximum reliability and accuracy.

And if to these virtues 2 we add a battery life of 120 hours with GPS on, we are facing one of the best high-end heart rate monitors & sports watches on the market.

This is the natural replacement for the Suunto Spartan Ultra that has been tweaked by adding features highly demanded by the Suunto community.

Suunto was very clear that one of the main demands of its users is the battery life. In this Suunto 9 they have developed a battery life management system with smart reminders to ensure the watch maximizes its performance.

Suunto 9 Baro: Few changes in design, many in functionality

It is true that this Suunto 9 that comes to replace as we said the Suunto Spartan Ultra does not come with too many aesthetic changes (nor did it need to our understanding) and the Finnish brand has continued to bet on incorporating specific features and features for sport, something that his faithful followers appreciate.

Suunto maintains its philosophy by including new features that are aimed at ultra-distance sports and that we had not seen in other brands.

Suunto 9 features

A battery to face any challenge however long it may be.

Suunto 9 battery life

Suunto has defined 3 battery modes (Performance, Endurance and Ultra) that work in a series of duration ranges from 25 hours to 120 hours of recording time with GPS tracking. But for further customization, it allows you to create your own battery life ranges by adding or removing functionalities. In addition, you can create custom battery modes to suit the athlete's needs. One of the features we liked is that the Suunto 9 is able to predict the battery life before you start your sports session. And during your physical activity if you see that it is not enough, you can switch to another mode to extend the duration.

In addition to the battery modes, Suunto 9 uses smart reminders and helps you make sure you have enough battery for your next adventure. Some reminders are preventive and are based, for example, on your activity history to ensure that you have a full charge for your next outing. If the watch detects low battery level during an exercise, it automatically suggests you to switch to a different battery mode.

Differences Suunto 9 vs Suunto Spartan Ultra

  • Different adjustable battery life modes. Which also allow to be changed during training so you don't run out of battery when training or competing. The maximum duration according to the brand is 120 hours.
  • FusedTrack A system developed by Suunto that will allow you to create GPS tracks but without the need to use GPS: A system that combines several of the watch's sensors to make the data collected in the GPS track more accurate. The function makes a lot of sense in long distance events in which the GPS instead of collecting data every second, collects it every 60 seconds. In that time a lot of things can happen. The FusedTrack function will allow using different sensors of the watch to create an algorithm that is able to collect data from those 60 seconds without GPS and make the track much more reliable without increasing the battery consumption.
  • They incorporate a new GPS chip, developed by Sony (the Suunto Spartan Ultra incorporated a Qualcomm SirfStar V).
  • Valencell optical pulse sensor (the same used by the Suunto Spartan Sport Wrist or Baro Wrist)
  • 24-hour heart rate tracking
  • 24mm quick-replaceable strap

80 sport modes

Suunto 9 sport modes

The Suunto 9 is primarily intended for long distance sports but that doesn't mean it can't be compatible with other types of modes. To give a practical example, a Jeep Cheroky can be used perfectly in the mountains but you can use it on urban routes. With the Suunto 9 suvcede the same thing.

It incorporates up to 80 sport modes and includes its wrist-based heart rate measurement system developed by Valencell.

The watch comes with full GPS route navigation, sunrise and sunset times, storm alarm among many other features already incorporated in the Suunto Spartan Ultra with the latest updates.

The Suunto 9 also allows you to attach a chest strap to make heart rate measurement more effective.
