Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo broke the half marathon world record on Sunday after winning the Lisbon Half Marathon in 57:31, just one second off the previous record held by Kibiwott Kandie.

Kiplimo already had the second best time of the distance, with 57:37, since he finished second last year in Valencia just behind Kandie. On that occasion four runners beat the record, but the Kenyan's was the record.

Almost a year later, Kiplimo has taken revenge with an exceptional race in Lisbon wearing Nike Vaporfly Next 2 shoes, in which he was alone most of the time. Second finished second was Ethiopian Mohamed Esa, 2:08 behind the winner.

Just turned 21, Kiplimo, world half marathon champion and Olympic bronze medalist at 10,000 meters, now adds a world record to his palmares.

In the women's category, the victoria went to Ethiopia's Tsehay G. Beyan, who crossed the finish line in a time of 1.06:06. She was joined on the podium by Kenyans Daisy Cherotich, with 1.06:15, and Joyce Chepkemoi, with 1.06:19.
