Generally, we only pay attention to heart rate when we are training or competing, as it provides us with the necessary information to determine the degree of intensity at which we should continue while performing a particular physical activity, either to avoid putting our health at risk or simply to achieve the goals we had previously set for ourselves.

For the layman, it is not only important to monitor your heart rate when you exercise, but also when you wake up every morning. Many amateur athletes overlook this valuable information because they are unaware of it. This morning data regarding our heart rate as soon as we open our eyes is extremely useful both if we want to improve our physical condition and if we want to enhance our performance, especially in sports involving endurance.

From now on, every time you wake up in the morning and while lying in bed, try monitoring your resting heart rate. If there is a significant increase (10% or more) in your heart rate over several days, this is an indication that you are either overtraining or lacking rest. If, on the other hand, there is a decrease in your heart rate at that time of day, it will be a sign that you are adapting to endurance training, making your heart stronger and more efficient, as it needs fewer beats to maintain basal state.

To carry out this simple check every morning, all you need to do is purchase a heart rate monitor. Currently there is a wide range of Heart Rate Monitors & Sports Watches on the market and you can get one of a leading brand without having to make a large financial outlay.

From there, it would be extremely useful to write down your heart rate, if possible daily or at least once a week, in a notebook, notepad or in the same mobile. Later you can check your evolution, by means of a graph, attaching the kind of training you did the day before. In this way, you will know how your cardiovascular system reacts to a certain type of training or in periods of rest.
