1 / 8Nike Running's legendary Vomero saga continues to evolve with a new update to keep the focus on being one of the benchmarks as daily training shoes with maximum cushioning and comfort. A sure value as an option for your daily running sessions, as well as for long distance races. A sublime experience to run more and better.
The context to the Nike Vomero 18
The Nike Vomero has always been synonymous with comfort and support, but with the arrival of the new version of the Nike Vomero 18 running shoes, the American brand's product developers have been able to elevate the performance of this model. A model that stands out for offering a smooth and fluid tread.
With the idea of satisfying the needs of the runner whose priority is to enjoy a high degree of cushioning, while ensuring a superior level of reliability in every workout. From beginner runners to the most experienced athletes will find in the Nike Vomero 18 their indefatigable travel companion to accumulate a large volume of kilometers on the road.
As it could not be otherwise, Nike has opted to include their cutting-edge technologies and high quality materials to enhance the running experience from the first to the last kilometer.
On the other hand, it is also important to note that these Vomero 18 from Nike Running join other outstanding families such as the Pegasus and Structure to form a varied and accurate catalog of shoes for running on road. To resolve any doubts, you should know that each of these sagas of daily training shoes responds to a specific type of cushioning:
- Pegasus: responsive, energy-returning cushioning.
- Structure: supportive cushioning to ensure maximum stability in every stride.
- Vomero: maximum cushioning, but without sacrificing excellent comfort.
Main features of the Nike Vomero 18
Looking in detail at these renewed Nike Vomero 18, their strengths make them an option which is really special and can even make a difference.
Premium cushioning capacity
Nike's Vomero 18 bring along with them a combination of full-length ZoomX foam and ReactX in the heel and forefoot. Why? To give you a soft and supportive experience that's second to none. The combination delivers cushioning that absorbs shock effectively; but also propels you forward.
Geometry with increased height
With a taller geometry, the Nike Vomero 18 has the most cushioning in the franchise's history. This means you have more material between your foot and the ground, giving you a protective and soft feel that you haven't felt before. They also have an additional 6 mm over their predecessor, the Nike Vomero 17, which translates into a more comfortable running experience and less impact on your joints.
With the female foot anatomy in mind
Another plus point for these Nike Vomero 18 lies in the fact that the famed Oregon-based company has taken a step forward by integrating women-specific details into its revamped design. Although they are designed for everyone, this special attention ensures superior fit and comfort. The last and fit have been optimized to better adapt to different foot shapes, ensuring that all runners can enjoy maximum comfort.
Smooth transitions
The durable rubber outsole is a perfect match for the new geometry, facilitating a fluid movement from heel to toe. This means that every transition is smooth and efficient, helping you maintain a steady pace and reduce fatigue over long distances.
Versatility and style
The breathable stretch mesh upper provides ventilation to keep your feet cool, while also offering a precise and more comfortable fit. Importantly, this material adapts to the anatomy of your foot, ensuring good support where you need it, all without restricting movement.
Not to mention that the textures and details combine functionality with a dynamic aesthetic, making them perfect for both running and walking, and even for use as everyday athletic shoes.
Brief comparison Nike Vomero 18 vs Nike Vomero 17
In the comparison of these Vomero 18 with regard to its previous version of the Nike Vomero 17 we can see the main new features, as well as the differential value of this Nike model.
The additional 6 mm, reach a midsole height of 46 mm, providing the highest cushioning known so far in the Vomero saga. This translates into a softer feel and superior protection.
The combination of ZoomX foam throughout the shoe and ReactX in the heel and forefoot, offering an unmatched soft and supportive experience. This new configuration improves energy return and lifespan.
Thanks to the new breathable stretch mesh, this model offers a more precise, comfortable and personalized fit compared to previous versions.
Referring to the fit it is also important to note that this Nike Vomero 18 has improved its design and fit to adapt to the female runner's foot.

Nike Vomero 18: Perhaps the best Vomero in history
The Vomero has decided to get really serious: I think I've been testing "Vomeros" almost since version 7. I've always understood the Vomero saga as a comfortable shoe, very cushioned, protected, safe. But above all the adjectives that we want to put on it, there was the concept of comfort. During these 18 years I have had to try models that I fell in love with, such as the Vomero 14 for its soft yet responsive feel. But also with editions that seemed more like a war tank, without spark, without standing out especially for their comfort like the Vomero 16 for example. To me, the Vomero saga has always embodied a clear purpose: to be Nike's maximum cushioning proposal, the "big sister" of the Pegasus. However, that idea often fell short of the mark.
The Nike Vomero 18 finally arrives with the intention of shutting mouths, including mine. Nike is redoubling their commitment to running and cushioned shoes in 2025, placing it at the forefront of the new structure of their catalog. With a 46 mm midsole in the heel and 36 mm in the forefoot, a 10 mm drop and a ZoomX + ReactX hybrid midsole, its sole mission is to pamper your legs on long, easy runs. And the most surprising thing: it is launched at a price of 150 euros, something unusual in a market where the high end is rarely below 180 euros.
I've run with them for several weeks in 10, 12 and 15 km runs, and I've even done a couple runs close to 20. We are, without a doubt, in front of the best Vomero I've ever worn, the one that gets that "touch" of softness with a slight plus of responsiveness. But let's go into details and decide whether or not this is a good shoe for your next runs or even for your long walks.
Nike's new strategy in 2025
Nike has reorganized their line of running shoes into three major training families:
- Pegasus: the most versatile segment, for everyday use.
- Structure: focused on support and stability.
- Vomero: maximum cushioning on the road.
The Vomero line will also be subdivided into several versions (Icon, Plus, Premium). This "Icon" is the shoe with maximum cushioning, designed for long and soft runs. In addition, it looks like Nike will take the spotlight away from models like the Infinity RN or the Invincible, channeling their soft foam, responsive (ZoomX) and durable (ReactX) offerings into the Vomero. So if you loved the Invincible's cushioning but weren't so keen on its certain instability, the Vomero 18 is the perfect alternative.
First impressions
Out of the box: Right off the bat, the thickness of the midsole is striking: a 46 mm foam block in the heel. It also features a very cushioned tongue and a sturdy upper, with medium density mesh. I personally am one of those who appreciate thick tongues: they avoid uncomfortable pressure on the instep. And with the Vomero 18, there's no way to feel the laces. It's like having a pillow covering your instep.
Weight and initial impressions
In my size (US 9.5), the shoe weighs 310 g, a bit high for a daily trainer. The scale sinks a bit too much, true, but when you put them on and start running they don't feel as heavy as I feared: they move with some grace. Clearly, Nike prioritizes comfort and cushioning over extreme lightness. For that there are other shoes in their catalog.
Midsole: ZoomX + ReactX, a winning tandem
This is probably the most important change in the Nike Vomero 18
ZoomX (PEBA foam) in the upper of the midsole: a very soft feel with some reactivity, ideal for minimizing impact.
ReactX (reformulation of the classic React) as the base of its midsole: firmer and more stable, it prolongs durability and prevents the foot from sinking in too much.
When running with them, the combination is perceived as a soft cushioning, but not exaggerated at light paces. And the plus is the stability provided by ReactX, something we had trouble finding in Nike Invincible, for example. At light paces (5:30/km), you are literally floating. If you decide to push it (4:30 or even 4:15), although it's not a fast running shoe, it gives you enough of a spark and that's appreciated.
Upper and support: 100% wraparound
Comfort zone at the ankle
The collar is soft and protects the malleoli very well. The rear part includes a firm heel counter (it looks like leather, and gives that area a sneaker style). The cushioning adds a very "secure" feel to the foot, something that Nike doesn't always achieve in other models like the Pegasus.
Forefoot and midfoot fit
The upper has enough width in the toe box, more than in other Nike (finally). You won't feel your toes being squeezed. And the midfoot features a loop style lacing system, with stitched pins. For me, a great success: it fits without creating pressure points.
Drawback? It may not be the most breathable shoe on the market, because the mesh is not very open and the tongue is quite thick. When the heat arrives our feet may suffer a little bit.
Performance: testing them at different paces and distances
Gentle paces and long runs
This is where it shines the most: if your range is between 5:00 and 5:40 min/km, or even slower, you'll love it. On 10-15 km runs at a relaxed pace, my legs ended up less punished than usual. The feeling of stability also surprised me (coming from the experience of the Invincible, which I found very unstable).
Intermediate paces and changes of pace
Even though it's a 310g shoe, you don't get nailed when putting in a faster mile. I've gotten close to 4:15 at some peak and while it's not "WOW ZoomX blast", it does hold up with dignity. If you plan on using it as your base shoe for marathon prep at paces around 4:30-5:00, it holds up without issue.
Sole versatility
What I like: the waffle tread in the metatarsal and heel area provides enough grip on asphalt roads and also on packed dirt roads. I wouldn't use it on trails, but I would use it for walks in parks or on mixed surfaces. The 10 mm drop helps for a more comfortable landing if you land on your heel. I think this shoe is also ideal for those people who are looking for a comfortable walking shoe...
Comparisons: direct competitors and pricing
Asics Gel-Nimbus 27: Another top running shoe. It is a bit softer, without the ReactX stabilizing part. Both are very comfortable, but the Nimbus 27 tends to be more expensive (170-180€).
New Balance 1080 v14: Slightly lighter, with Fresh Foam X also very soft, but its structure is more neutral and maybe less "safe".

New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v14
New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v14
Hoka Bondi 9: Classic of maximum cushioning. Perhaps more "total cushioning" but a bit clumsier at lively paces.
adidas Ultraboost 5: Rival in terms of stack and comfort, but the Ultraboost is a bit faster although it doesn't give as much stability feeling and its price is usually higher.
One of the details that I liked the most is that while models like the Nimbus or the 1080 v14 are around 200€, Nike launches the Vomero 18 at 150€. For being the "cushioning top" of the brand, it is not bad at all. And with the philosophy of the great "runners" of today, it seems like a huge draw to me.
Pros and cons: the best and what can be improved
The best
- Balanced cushioning: ZoomX + ReactX, soft but not rubbery.
- Surprising stability: Despite the height, you don't wobble.
- Very comfortable upper: Beastly cushioning, not restrictive last in toe box.
- Competitive price: 150 € when the competition is at a starting price of 180€.
What could be improved
- High weight: 310 g in size 9.5 US, and it feels a bit heavy if you go above 12-15 km/h, although not as much as I feared.
- Poor breathability: Dense upper and thick tongue will fare poorly in summer heat.
- Less versatile: Not best suited for series days, intense farleks or short runs at sub 4:30 paces.
What type of runner do I recommend it for?
If you are looking for a comfortable all-around trainer. If your running is usually 8-15 km at moderate paces, you will feel protected and comfortable.
Marathon runners with a 4:30 pace and upwards, as a daily training shoe.
Runners of medium-high weight, who appreciate that support a little firmer than the Invincible, for example.
Those who want a very comfortable and durable walking shoe for asphalt and dirt roads.
The Nike Vomero 18 finally delivers as promised
After multiple iterations, the Nike Vomero 18 proves that the Swoosh brand wants to once again dominate the "max cushion" segment with a balanced product. The ZoomX brings the softness we were missing; the ReactX, stability and durability. Add to this a strikingly "low" price (150 €/$) compared to other renowned rivals.
Is it a fast shoe? No; its focus is on taking care of your legs. Is it pleasant on medium-long runs? Absolutely yes. Can you squeeze a bit of speed out of it if you need to? Yes.
After 10+ years of testing Vomeros, I'm sticking with this one without hesitation: the most stable, the smoothest, the most "rounded" of the saga, and at a reasonable cost in today's craze. So if you're looking for your great 2025 runner with Nike's guarantee and ZoomX foam (albeit combined), look no further: Vomero 18. Go for it, without fear of distances and with the certainty that your legs will thank you for it.
