Photos HOKA Bondi 9
1 / 5HOKA's maximalist designs never go unnoticed, and always generate high expectations before their market launches. This happens with the arrival of the renewed and expected HOKA Bondi 9. A model whose main hallmark is its large volume of foam to contribute to an extraordinarily soft footprint. Maximum cushioning at your service so you can enjoy every kilometer you run.
This HOKA Bondi 9 running shoe is back with a revamp to bring you more softness, more support and more durability in your daily workouts. If you are not yet familiar with the American brand, we remind you that it was one of the pioneers in introducing the concept of "maximum cushioning" in models for running on the road.
In 2011, the first edition of the Bondi by HOKA burst onto the market as a disruptive proposal, focused on providing a smooth running sensation even over long distances, protecting the joints and contributing to a more relaxed and comfortable stride. Over the years, they have become a reference for runners of all types and conditions. Especially for all runners who seek to minimize impact over many kilometers or who prioritize comfort above all else.
Now, in 2025, HOKA announces the arrival of the HOKA Bondi 9, a new generation that incorporates advances in the midsole, upper and outsole. The brand describes this shoe as the most comfortable option for daily workouts, but also the most durable and efficient within the Bondi line.
Its philosophy remains the same: to bet on a soft, stable and well-protected tread, making your daily runs and walks as pleasant as possible.
At RUNNEA we give you all the keys to this latest renewal of the HOKA Bondi 9, a shoe option of maximum cushioning of reference, and a bestseller.
Main new features and characteristics of the HOKA Bondi 9
In this new version of the Bondi 9, HOKA has emphasized several aspects that differentiate this version from its predecessors and, below, I present them to you:
New supercritical foam compound in the midsole.
The heart of any HOKA shoe has always been in its voluminous and eye-catching midsole. In this ninth version, the American brand introduces a new premium foam made with supercritical EVA, which means that the cellular structure of the foam has been modified to make it lighter, more resilient and more responsive. How can this change benefit you? Directly, in an even softer and more cushioned, yet responsive and durable feel.
If you are one of those runners who have already tried the Bondi in its previous versions, you will know what we are talking about. That feeling of "running on a cloud". Undoubtedly, one of its main attractions. Now, with this new compound, that feeling is maintained and even enhanced, making each stride a soft landing that reduces fatigue on long distance runs.
Increased sole height and updated geometries
One of the hallmarks of this model has always been its midsole height, which in the Bondi 9 is increased by an additional 2 millimeters. It may not seem like much, but this small difference positively affects cushioning, offering extra cushioning under your feet. On the other hand, the updated geometries include a refined MetaRocker and a rear-centered Foot Frame Active to provide more support and stride control.
We remind you of these concepts:
- MetaRocker: is the midsole curvature that characterizes almost all HOKA models. It favors the transition from heel to toe, providing a feeling of continuity in the foot strike.
- Active Foot Frame: in simple terms, it wraps the foot as if it were a perfect seat for the heel, improving stability and giving more security in each stride.
Thanks to these changes, the HOKA Bondi 9 feels more balanced and fluid, ideal for runs of different distances, from 5K to marathons, or even for long walks, if you are interested in absolute comfort.
Revamped upper and 3D molded collar
HOKA has not limited itself to adjusting the inside of the shoe; it has also redesigned its upper to offer a more comfortable and adaptable fit. Among the materials chosen is a structured fabric with increased breathability zones, which keeps the foot well ventilated, something essential if you live in hot areas or have intense and prolonged workouts.
The new 3D molded collar is another new feature that seeks to improve the experience of this model, helping the foot to enter more easily and keeping the heel in place to avoid slipping. This detail provides softness in the ankle area, reducing friction and improving the overall feeling of comfort.
Durabrasion rubber outsole
If your experience with previous models like the HOKA Bondi 8 was satisfactory, but you noticed that the outsole wore out too quickly, you'll be pleased to know that the Bondi 9 incorporate a Durabrasion rubber compound in the high-impact areas. This translates into greater resistance to wear, especially for runners who accumulate many kilometers per week on asphalt. With this addition, HOKA is committed to increasing the lifespan of the shoe and ensuring reliable traction, every kilometer.
More sustainable construction
It is also important to note that HOKA has also made a commitment to making a more sustainable shoe, with 55% recycled polyester in the technical mesh upper. This step reflects the brand's interest in minimizing its carbon footprint and moving towards more environmentally friendly manufacturing models.
Weight and drop suitable for long distances
The Bondi 9 maintain a 5 mm drop, a brand standard that favors a footprint that is not too aggressive in the heel and, at the same time, does not require a very pronounced transition for runners coming from higher drops.
The weight, according to HOKA, is 263 grams for women's running shoes and 297 grams for men's running shoes shoes. A very optimal and light weight, considering its focus on its high level of cushioning and comfort.
Brief comparison HOKA Bondi 9 vs HOKA Bondi 8
For those of us who have been closely following the evolution of the Bondi saga, the question surely surge: how does this ninth version differ from its predecessor, the HOKA Bondi 8?
Midsole
- Bondi 8: used a high density EVA foam, very soft, but not as advanced as the supercritical.
- Bondi 9: introduces the new supercritical foam. Lighter, more durable and more responsive. This is a key change in the running experience.
Midsole height
- Bondi 8: offered considerable height, but now falls slightly behind in numbers.
- Bondi 9: adds an additional 2 mm, providing that extra cushioning that is especially noticeable on long distance runs.
Refined MetaRocker and Active Foot Frame.
- Bondi 8: already featured the brand's signature design, with a smooth MetaRocker and a fairly reliable Active Foot Frame.
- Bondi 9: adjusts the geometry to create an even smoother transition and puts the focus on the heel with a more pronounced Active Foot Frame, improving stability.
Upper and ankle area.
- Bondi 8: Comfortable and breathable upper, but somewhat basic compared to the brand's latest releases.
- Bondi 9: Revised in detail to make it more adaptable and ventilated, while including a 3D molded collar that enhances the soft feel and facilitates the fit of the shoe.
Outsole durability
- Bondi 8: One of the complaints of some users was the wear in the areas of greatest contact with the asphalt.
- Bondi 9: Now introduces Durabrasion rubber, offering greater resistance to prolonged use and better traction.
In summary, the HOKA Bondi 9 is a step forward in the evolution of the range, with:
- A more efficient supercritical foam platform.
- A refinement in the geometry for the footprint.
- A more resistant and comfortable upper.
So, if you enjoyed the HOKA Bondi 8, but wanted extra cushioning and durability, you will probably find in this HOKA Bondi 9 the definitive version.
Type of runner and recommended uses of the HOKA Bondi 9
We already know what makes the HOKA Bondi 9 special, but who are they really made for? In what contexts do they shine the most?
Long-distance runners and light training runs
If you usually train for half marathons or marathons, and you need a running shoe that pampers your joints, the Bondi 9 are a great ally. Their great cushioning reduces impact and helps you maintain a smooth stride, even when distances get longer.
Runners looking for maximum protection
The volumetric cushioning of these shoes is ideal for medium to heavy runners who need extra cushioning to avoid muscle overload. Also for those who are in the process of recovering from an injury and need to reduce the aggressiveness of the impact when running.
Novice athletes or those who prioritize comfort.
Although not a model specifically for beginners, they can be a good choice for novice runners who value protection. The moderate 5 mm drop is accessible, and the softness of the tread avoids "punishing" the feet and ankles too much when starting to run.
Walkers and everyday use
Its versatility is not limited to running workouts. Many users find the Bondi line to be one of the most comfortable options for walking long distances or standing for extended periods of time. The revamped upper and supercritical midsole make this model an ideal everyday companion.
Runners with wide feet or who want a roomier last
HOKA's traditional design usually offers a sufficiently wide midfoot and forefoot last . With the Bondi 9, this roominess is maintained, and the structured upper with breathable zones ensures that the foot does not feel compressed.
Running on asphalt or hard surfaces
The HOKA Bondi 9 is primarily intended for road, bike paths or very compact dirt tracks. Their use is focused on smooth surfaces where cushioning is maximized.
HOKA Bondi 9, the maximalist option you were looking for?
In a landscape where many brands seek to stand out with various technologies and aggressive designs, HOKA's Bondi line remains true to its philosophy: to offer a super-smooth, stable and highly protective running experience. With the Bondi 9, it reinforces that legacy, incorporating elements that enhance its durability and cushioning quality.
Simply put, the Bondi 9 keeps the promise of being the brand's most cushioned road running shoe. If you're one of those runners who prioritize comfort and protection on your daily runs - whether it's because you put in a lot of miles a week or because you want a model that takes care of your joints - this new version is worth considering. Beyond running, even if you are looking for a shoe to walk long distances or stand for hours, the softness of the Bondi 9 can become an ally to reduce fatigue and maintain a pleasant feeling underfoot.
The HOKA Bondi 9 is available now and its launch coincides with the "Everybody Bondi" campaign, which emphasizes inclusivity and the idea that everyone can enjoy running thanks to the comfort this model brings. If you are looking for a new ally to devour kilometers without excessively punishing your feet and joints, we encourage you to try them. Whether you come from a previous Bondi or if it is your first experience with the HOKA brand, you will be taking a step towards a softer and more protective stride.

Maximum cushioning, zero discomfort: the perfect ally for running safe and comfortabe
A few months ago I suffered a sprained ankle that became more complicated than expected and forced me to completely stop my training for a few months. In order to get back to training, I had to rethink the type of shoe I should be running in. Until now I was not looking for too much cushioning in the shoes I use, since there are certain shoes with which I notice the foam sinks too much and I don't like that.
So I came to this conclusion: I needed a shoe that would give me security, stability and good cushioning to avoid relapses and gradually return to feeling comfortable running. I had heard wonders of the HOKA Bondi 9 as a "top of the line" model in terms of comfort, and I decided that they could be my colleagues to return to the arena. Spoiler: it has been one of the best decisions I have made in this stage of recovery.
I've been using them for several weeks, both for light training on asphalt and for slightly longer outings and some routes where I had to run on gravel roads. I'll tell you my feelings, what I liked, what I would improve and if I think they can fit you, whether or not you're in recovery like me.
Main features of the HOKA Bondi 9
The first thing that strikes you about the Bondi 9 is their design. They have a somewhat bulky model, yes, but that translates to some of the best cushioning I've tried. Although I haven't tried their previous version, I've read that the main change in this new version is in the midsole, which is now lighter but doesn't lose any protection thanks to a supercritical EVA foam. I have asked an acquaintance who has tested both models, and indeed he confirms it.
It is also very responsive underfoot. Thanks to the famous MetaRocker system incorporated by HOKA (something like a kind of rocker), the transition from heel to toe is super smooth and natural. I had a certain "fear" of supporting the foot wrong or forcing the ankle, but I felt from the first moment that the shoe accompanied me, I did not have to fight with it in those moments when the body asks for help to keep pulling forward.
The upper has also been redesigned. You can see that it is built with breathable materials and also, from what I have seen, sustainable (it has a high percentage of recycled polyester, which I value). But what I liked the most and what I consider important is that it adapts very well to the foot without pressure or chafing, its front part is very wide and the toes are free without being squeezed on any side.
It seems that HOKA has taken a step forward to wider and friendlier lasts with the foot, barefoot style. In my case, I didn't need any break-in period: I felt comfortable from the first workout.
The sole also deserves special mention. It has rubber at key wear points, which translates into good traction and durability. Although I've used it quite a bit on loose dirt roads, I've never had a feeling of instability. I've always felt in control, and that's partly thanks to the good foam in the model.
Runner profile of the HOKA Bondi 9
This is where I think these shoes can shine for many people. The Bondi 9 are clearly intended for those who prioritize comfort above all else. They are not shoes for explosive sets or to beat your personal best in a 10k. They are ideal for those who want to train without discomfort, do a lot of miles or, as in my case, need a safe transition after an injury.
I would also highly recommend them to neutral runners with a tendency to load the joints. With so much cushioning, the impact on ankles, knees and hips is greatly reduced. It's a shoe that protects and takes care of you.
If you are just starting to run, or if you are looking for a shoe that will accompany you on long runs without punishing your legs, this model may be perfect. And if you come from a period of hiatus, injury or simply need to regain confidence in your stride, the Bondi 9 can be your best allies.
And beware! they are exceptional companions for sightseeing and non-stop walking. I took them with me on my last trip to Paris, where we walked an average of 18 kilometers a day. And you know that feeling of being on your feet for so many hours when you feel all the parts of your body loaded and the shoes squeeze you in all parts of the foot? Well, I give a 12 out of 10 to the HOKA Bondi 9 for their comfort!
What distances are the HOKA Bondi 9 recommended for?
I have used them mainly for short and medium distances, between 8k and 12k, but I have also dared with three 20 km outings and they have responded wonderfully. What surprised me the most is that, although they are quite cushioned shoes, they do not become heavy with the passing of kilometers. On the contrary, their lightness (which you don't expect when you see them on the outside) and their responsiveness mean that you can maintain a comfortable pace for a long time.
I think they are ideal for those who are preparing half marathons or even marathons if your pace is not very demanding. Also if you are training for pleasure and not necessarily looking for a good time, you will enjoy every kilometer with them.
Here's what I liked most about the Bondi 9
Without a doubt, the cushioning is one of the things that surprised me the most. It's a difficult feeling to describe, but when you run with the running Bondi 9 you feel that everything is "cushioned". It's not too soft (it doesn't bounce like a mat), but you feel your foot protected without losing contact with the ground.
Another point that I loved is the transition in the stride. It has helped me a lot to regain my natural running style. The sole has a shape that facilitates the movement from heel to toe in a very fluid way. I didn't feel any jerks or sharp impacts, and that, when you're coming off an injury, gives you a great deal of confidence.
And of course, the fit of the upper. I haven't had a single chafe. I have a normal foot, neither too narrow nor too wide, but sometimes I do feel that with certain shoes my little toe asks for help because of how tight it is. The material is soft, fits like a glove and ventilates well even on hot days.
Possible points for improvement
If I had to give it a "but", it would be the overall bulkiness of the shoe. Although this robust design is precisely what allows for such spectacular cushioning, it is true that it can be a bit bulky visually, especially if you prefer a more discreet profile.
Shoes that are direct competitors of the model
If you're looking at similar options, there are some shoes on the market that directly compete with Bondi 9. For example:
Would you recommend the HOKA Bondi 9?
Getting back to running after an injury is not easy. It's a physical process, but also a mental one. On that path, having a shoe like the HOKA Bondi 9 has helped me regain my confidence, get back to enjoying running without fear and, above all, feel protected.
They are not the shoes for everyone, but almost. If you're looking for speed or a lightweight model for racing, there are probably other more suitable options. But if you want maximum cushioning, softness in the tread and a shoe that really takes care of you, I can't stop recommending them.
In my case, they have gone from being "a shoe for recovery" to becoming one of my favorite models for long workouts and light runs. Because in the end, running is not only about going fast, but also about enjoying the way and I must say that with Bondi 9, I have felt very comfortable on the way.

HOKA Bondi 9, your ideal shoe if you are not obsessed with times
Yes, it is confirmed! It is whishful thinking to talk about a perfect running shoe in this day and age. Most of all, and fortunately, because brands have taken innovation and development as their flagship, and that's why each new version always comes to the market with something new to show. However, we can talk about the ideal running shoe. At this point, my recommendation is the new version of the HOKA Bondi
Why this firm commitment to the HOKA Bondi 9? Let me quickly tell you my running profile, and it will become clearer: I have gray hair -more than I would like, but it is what it is-; my weight is over 80 kilos; I alternate gym sessions with going out for runs of no more than 10 kilometers; and my paces are low, above 6:00 min/km, and going up. With this in mind, the Bondi 9 suit me because they offer me high protection, an excellent degree of comfort and optimal support for safe running.
First impressions of the HOKA Bondi 9
I can finally say that I have got rid of that thorn in my side with HOKA. Despite all the time I've been at RUNNEA, I finally had the opportunity to try this maximum cushioning option from the American company. Wearing them, yes; but trying them, never, until now.
I'll also tell you that I didn't have them all with me, because yes, it's true that the voluminous midsole of these Bondi 9 is a big plus, but, despite that height, its profile is low, since it has a drop of 5 millimeters. I'm used to higher drops, and of more standard format.
First three kilometers with them, and doubts dissipated immediately. They adapt and wrap the foot in an extraordinary way, and you feel their great comfort from the first moment. I believe that you will not need any adaptation process to ride with good sensations from the beginning.
Here I have to agree with my cousin, the real runner in the family. Ever since he tried HOKA, he doesn't want any other shoe. Every time we meet, he always ends up telling me how good the models of the brand with the "bird or -Albatross-" as logo are. Although it is clear to me that he plays in another league. Among his repertoire of models the HOKA Mach 5 and the HOKA Rocket X 2 stand out.
What I liked best about the HOKA Bondi 9
Reading the product sheet, as well as other details of these HOKA Bondi 9, it must be said that this is a saga that has not been updated since 2022. A long time to wait, but, by all accounts, it has been worth it. Its innovations make it the best cushioned, lightest and most durable models of this successful family. I can't vouch for that, because I haven't had the chance to test the previous version, the HOKA Bondi 8. Although I trust the comments of the RUNNEA Team experts, those are the main hallmarks of the Bondi saga.
I have no doubt that the HOKA Bondi 9 is a significant evolution in the Bondi family, incorporating a supercritical EVA midsole that offers superior cushioning and remarkable reactivity. This new material absorbs and distributes impact more efficiently, making for an extremely smooth running experience, ideal for those of us looking for maximum protection in every stride. Despite its high profile, HOKA's Bondi 9 feels surprisingly stable for its height, making it a reliable ally for both relaxed runs and long recovery sessions.
From the first moment you put on the Bondi 9, incredible comfort becomes apparent. The upper wraps the foot softly, allowing for an almost immediate fit that reduces any initial discomfort. In addition, its heel collar is perfectly designed to support the ankle without excessive pressure, providing security in each transition. This harmony between upper and midsole translates into great performance when running at more controlled paces, but also into an excellent choice for walking. Thanks to its excellent cushioning and relaxed fit, it is easy to wear all day without feeling foot fatigue.
Designed to excel at slow and steady paces, the HOKA Bondi 9 maintains its essence as a tireless running shoe, while adding a touch of versatility for those who want all-around protection for daily workouts. The outsole offers a good combination of grip and durability, so it's built to last and withstand high mileage without degrading quickly. When running, you feel that improved lightness: it's lighter than the HOKA Bondi 8, which contributes to a less clunky and more agile feel, without losing the characteristic softness that defines the Bondi saga.
From my point of view, the HOKA Bondi 9 consolidates itself as a maximum cushioning shoe with a plus of stability and lightness compared to previous versions. It retains its "cloud for your feet" spirit, but now it is more refined and adaptable to different routines, including long walks and long-distance runs. For runners who prioritize comfort and protection over any other aspect, it is difficult to find a better companion to get through the miles with absolute peace of mind.
Opportunities for improvement in the HOKA Bondi 9
As for opportunities for improvement, I can't find any major flaws. It cannot go unnoticed the detail that the HOKA Bondi 9 have managed to reduce their weight compared to previous editions. Specifically 297 grams in standard size 9 USA for men, making it an option focused on offering maximum cushioning and comfort. For those who value more versatility, there are still lighter options within its category.
It's more of a personal question than an improvement, but I would like to see the tongue integrated into the upper, following HOKA s trend in their trail running shoes like the HOKA Speedgoat and HOKA Mafate Speed. Honestly, I think the level of support would already be premium.

Why the HOKA Bondi 9 might be your ideal shoe
To conclude this review of the HOKA Bondi 9, I will tell you that it will have my vote as a candidate for the best shoe with maximum cushioning, and even, why not, for the best shoe of the year in the next edition of the RUNNEA European Awards 2025.
So I throw a direct question at you: Are you looking for a running experience that allows you to disconnect from the clock and concentrate on the pure pleasure of running? The HOKA Bondi 9 is designed to turn every stride into a moment of absolute comfort and versatility. With almost infinite cushioning, you'll feel your legs respond smoothly to even the longest of runs, while the upper naturally adapts to keep you comfortable.
If your priority is to enjoy the process and not obsess about times, this HOKA shoe is your best ally. Forget about unnecessary fatigue and focus on what really matters: enjoy every kilometer, knowing that your feet are wrapped by a model designed to last and perform without sacrificing comfort.
