When it comes to running I'm a peculiar guy, I confess. I love running, it's my natural medicine, my low cost psychologist, but I like to run on a treadmill. Mainly in the winter (maybe a pneumonia some years ago is to blame).
I run at the gym or at home (Verdeliss style but at a more human pace) 3 or 4 days a week, with series, changes of pace and runs included. Sessions between 45 and 80 minutes. That's why for me the choice of running shoes is fundamental. When you run on a treadmill, you are running against the speed of the mat, against the incline, but also against your mind. Those of you who run on a treadmill know it all too well, any slight discomfort is a perfect excuse to stop. So yes. I'm very picky about my ideal shoe.
Not sure which shoe to choose?
In a few simple steps we help you to choose the ideal running shoe for you.
GO TO THE RECOMMENDERThroughout these years I've been lucky enough to try many models, but I wanted to make a list of the 10 shoes that have convinced me the most this 2024 and my top 3 for treadmill running. Let's see if we agree on any of them...
The 10 shoes I've used this year for treadmill running
Joma R1000
The Joma R1000 are a very interesting option, first because they are shoes with a carbon plate and then because of their surprising price. They incorporate a not too firm plate that provides extra reactivity, something that has been very good for me for series sessions on the treadmill. The cushioning is also ample, but in longer sessions of more than 45 minutes, I do notice that the running comfort begins to decline. Possibly because of the plate, or because of the elevated rocker. So I have used them in shorter and faster sessions.
In feel, I found them excellent for tempo changes and explosive sessions, where the plate is really noticeable. However, if you are looking for maximum comfort for long runs, these would not be my first choice.
New Balance Fuelcell Rebel v4
These running shoes are a marvel, they are pure lightness. From the first step, the feeling is of a very noticeable energy return thanks to its Fuelcell foam. On the treadmill, this translates into a dynamic and agile experience, perfect for fast sessions or intervals, but also for longer runs if you weigh no more than 75 kg. The fit is precise, and the breathable mesh upper makes them comfortable even on longer sessions.
One of the best things about these shoes is their versatility in paces. They work just as well in explosive changes as they do in an average 60-minute run. However, for sessions longer than 70 minutes, if you weigh more than 75 kg, the cushioning may fall short compared to more comfort-oriented models.
Adidas Ultraboost 5
One of the comfort queens of 2024. These are my shoes of choice for long treadmill runs, especially when I'm looking for stability and generous cushioning. The Boost Ligth is still one of the compounds with the best balance between comfort and reactivity, and this is especially noticeable on workouts of 80 minutes or more. Despite their slightly heavier weight, they don't feel sluggish, but obviously they're not the best suited for intervals or very fast paces either.
The sensations when running with the Adidas Ultraboost 5 on a treadmill are very good. Stability is outstanding, and I never felt like I lost control, even with incline on the treadmill. If you prioritize comfort on long sessions, these are a safe bet.
Adidas Supernova Rise
A balanced model that stands out for its comfort at medium to light paces. The Supernova Rise has good cushioning, a comfortable fit and is secure, it just lacks that touch of reactivity that could make them stand out in faster sessions. On long runs, they remain stable, with a firmer running feel.
In feel, I'd say these are "all-around" shoes for the treadmill. If you're looking for something versatile with no claims of reactivity or ultra comfort, they're a good choice.
Nike Pegasus 41
A classic that never disappoints. The Nike Pegasus 41 are very balanced, with cushioning that delivers on both medium paces and light sessions. On the treadmill, they feel stable and comfortable. They have been one of the models I have used the most this year. They are for runners up to 80 kg.
They are a reliable option if you are looking for a multipurpose model that can be used both for light runs and for faster paces. I just miss some more cushioning in the forefoot area especially when running with incline on the treadmill.
Puma Deviate Nitro 3
Responsive, fast and with a modern design. The Puma Deviate Nitro 3 stands out on the treadmill for its ability to return energy with every stride and combine it with good cushioning and comfort. The carbon plate combined with the Nitro foam makes them an excellent choice for fast sessions. However, in long sessions I find the same thing happens to me as with the Joma R1000, their cushioning feels a bit firm, which may not be ideal if you go over 50 minutes.
In feel, I found them spectacular for tempo changes and intense workouts. If you are looking for something for short intervals or fast treadmill sessions of between 30 and 45 minutes they are a great choice.
Mizuno Skyrise 5
A model that stands out for its comfort and comfort in running, perfect for soft rhythms and relaxed runs. In long sessions, the cushioning is very good and the sensations are spectacular. But don't ask for reactivity, you won't find it.
On the treadmill, they feel like a safe and reliable model, but don't expect explosiveness. They are ideal for runners up to 80 kg who are looking for a lot of comfort above all else.
HOKA Mach X2
With the Mach X2, cushioning and reactivity are its strong point. They feel great on the treadmill, especially at faster paces. However, as they have a plate (Pebax in this case), in sessions of more than an hour I'm starting to miss some comfort and they lack some stability as well.
For running sessions with changes of pace and livelier rhythms, these shoes are a very good option.
Nike Alphafly 3
These shoes are designed for competition, and it shows. On the treadmill, I use them exclusively for fast sessions, as their structure and snug fit are not the most comfortable for long runs. Despite this, the reactivity and energy return they offer are incredible. They are not very stable, so if your running technique is not good, be careful.
If you're looking for pure speed sensations and want to take care of your Alphafly for asphalt, using them on the treadmill for high-intensity workouts is a great idea.
Asics Novablast 5
A model that does everything right. The Asics Novablast 5 stands out for its balance between lightness, comfort and reactivity. On the treadmill, they work just as well in light running as they do in interval sessions. The FlyteFoam Blast Max foam provides a soft feel without sacrificing dynamism. And now the forefoot area is wider, giving you more stability and security during your run.
In terms of feel, I would say that these are the most versatile shoes I've tried for the treadmill this year. If you are looking for a model that adapts to any session, these are a safe bet.
My three favorites
Asics Novablast 5: the perfect balance.
These shoes are my favorite for varied treadmill sessions. They offer an excellent combination of lightness, comfort and reactivity. You'll feel nimble on intervals and comfortable on light runs, which is something few other shoes can do.
New Balance Fuelcell Revel v4: responsiveness and comfort
When I want to focus on fast sessions, this model is my choice. Its Fuelcell technology provides excellent energy return, while its secure fit allows for worry-free changes of pace. Plus, they don't sacrifice comfort.
Adidas Ultraboost 5: comfort for long runs
For those 70 to 80-minute sessions at a steady pace, Ultraboost 5 are my choice. Their cushioning is generous and their stability and a certain reactivity give me a perfect balance for my longer workouts.
I know that for many people running on a treadmill is not very glamorous, but it is a choice that I see more and more people making. I don't know about your gyms, in mine it's hard to find a free treadmill. And choosing the right shoes is fundamental, I would say even more than when I go out on asphalt, because if I don't feel comfortable the thought to stop is very tempting, you have many more things to do in a gym. My three favorites stand out because each one is perfectly suited to a type of session: fast intervals, long runs and balanced workouts. If you're looking to improve your treadmill sessions, I recommend you try one of these options.
